Finding the Perfect Nursery Rug

With Georgina Jackson

Getting ready for a new arrival can be a whirlwind of nappies, new-born baby grows, and nursery decorating. Decorating your new-borns nursery can be one of the most exciting parts of pregnancy, creating a soft soothing space for you and your little one is a top-priority! Once you have all the furniture and the much-needed storage solutions, you’ll need to tie the room together and what better way to define your (hopefully) sleepy space than with your babies very own rug?

There are so many rugs to choose from, so where do you start? We sat down with Flair Rug’s Digital Marketing Executive and mum-to-be, Georgina to get all the ins and out of nursery rugs.

Hi Georgina! How excited are you for your new arrival?

I’m both excited and nervous at the same time (first time mum!) and have no idea what to expect! I can’t wait to meet the little person whose been growing in my tummy, but I’m also scared about being responsible for someone. At nearly 38 weeks pregnant, I can’t believe I’m coming towards the end of this amazing journey and my little girl could be arriving in the next few weeks. Eek!

Are you all prepared, how’s the nursery looking?

The nursery is finally finished, the last picture frame has been hung and the draws are now full of baby clothes. I absolutely love the room; I find the colour scheme really calming and relaxing. My husband often finds me tweaking a cushion or picture frame – I’m obsessed with making it perfect. I bet I won’t care (or find time!) when the baby’s here!  I now need to find a way to evict Bella my cat who has fully moved in before the baby arrives!

Does your nursery have a theme?

I started off with the idea of having a rainbow nursery theme, mixing neutrals with a few pops of bold accent colours. I began with a rainbow cushion and then added bold pops of yellow as well as sun, cloud and star motives to tie the whole look together. I’ve also thrown a few animals into the mix with a Giraffe statue and coat hooks, a little bird and a horse which adds a sense of fun to the room. I’ve picked a lovely pastel pink colour for the feature wall and painted the fireplace white to match the furniture. It’s quite a girly room!

Do you think it’s important to have a rug in a Nursery?

I wanted to make the room as cosy as possible, so a rug was essential! Also, as the carpet is a plain grey colour, a rug is the perfect way to add colour and pattern. A rug will also protect the carpet from spills and dirt, mums keep telling me how messy babies are!

What was important to you when looking for a nursery rug?

First of all, a nursery rug should be soft and add a sense of comfort to the room. I wanted a rug that was plush enough for my baby to lie on for tummy time.  The Pick N Mix Twinkle rug is just perfect, it’s so sumptuous and soft, I love stroking it!

Rugs can also add pattern, colour and texture. I chose the Twinkle rug in caramel cream as the neutral colour base fits perfectly with my colour scheme – not to mention the star pattern which adds visual interest to the rug.

Caring for your rug

23

JUNE, 2017

You’ve spent many a painstaking hour searching for your perfect Flair rug, and finally you’ve nailed down a choice from the vast portfolio. The hard work is done!

The great news is that all our rugs are simple to care for, so once down there’s no complex maintenance. Whether wool, polyester or polypropylene fibre, you can keep your underfoot pride and joy looking its best by following these simple tips.

Stopping at source

Stopping debris at source is the best way to prevent it finding its way onto your rug! We recommend employing sufficient entrance matting so that guests can wipe their shoes before entering the home. It sounds simple, but it’s an often-neglected aspect of home ownership, and one that can prevent nasty surprises from being ground into your Flair rug.

Vacuuming

Vacuuming is our next port of call, admittedly not the most exciting of subjects but from time to time our rugs will require more than a simple shaking out. Aim to vacuum your Flair rug once a week, possibly more if in a high traffic area like a hallway, ensuring you vacuum both vertically and horizontally to attack all angles of the rug’s fibre. This should help to pick up any awkward debris, for instance pet hairs.

When disaster does strike, it is recommended to act as quickly as possible; after all, the longer a spillage is left on the surface of your rug, the greater potential there is to stain.

Acting Fast

If the spillage is left for too long, you could require the help of a professional service, and based on experience this will not be a cheap job! If your rug will be laid in a space with high potential for stains (eg. a child’s room or dining room), we recommend choosing from our polypropylene range. This fibre boasts added stain resistance, so ideal for areas of this type.

How to attack stains

Quick action can often prevent staining, but this can’t always be the case. If you’ve removed excess moisture and there’s still marking, carefully blot using paper towels and tap water in an attempt to reduce the stain. A word of warning: the myth of removing red wine using white wine is exactly that – a myth! Equally, fairy liquid should be avoided, as stains can reappear once residue has subsided. WoolSafe’s Carpet Cleaning App is a good point of call.
