Keeping History Alive with our V&A Rugs

APRIL 2019

World Heritage Day celebrates the history around us, the landmarks and monuments that symbolise our culture and history.

At Flair Rugs we don’t have much expertise in historic landmarks or protected heritage sites, but we do have a lot of expertise in design. This year we’ll be using World Heritage Day as a chance to celebrate our Luxmi collaborations with the historic archives of the V&A museum: V&A Inspired.

A collection of over 2.3 million objects. An archive spanning over 5000 years. It’s easy to see why the V&A Museum is a leading authority in the world of art and design, housing some of the best work from inspiring artists around the world. By scouring the archives at the V&A our Luxmi designers create beautiful designs inspired by the work of past artists and designers, to bring timeless style and a touch of history to your home. Enabling Luxmi and the V&A to keep telling the stories of these historic designs for years to come.

Zelda

In an era associated with wealth and speed Art Deco designs are streamlined and glamorous, symbolised perfectly in the latest addition to the V&A Inspired collection: Zelda. Inspired by a Pochoir Print by French artist and chemist Edouard Bénédictus, the geometric design is updated using a lustrous pastel palette. The silky threads used within the woollen pile offer a touch of Hollywood glamour, perfectly encapsulating the opulence of the era.

Heron

The gentle design behind our Heron rug is a homage to the work of C.F.A. Voysey. Capturing the balance of loving craftsmanship with thoughtful design. The Heron rug is carefully hand-crafted in India using a soft blend of wool and viscose picturing a peaceful scene highlighting the artists simple style yet elegant and natural design.

Phoenix

An incredibly delicate piece of 19th Century Chinese wallpaper is the inspiration behind our V&A Phoenix rug. The natural design is based around the mythical Phoenix, a symbol of prosperity and rebirth. The redesign of this rug keeps much of the original design, however a soft duck-egg palette gives an on-trend update to the original cerulean hues. The historic design is defined using hand-crafted ‘shearing’ techniques to highlight areas of light such as the focal Phoenix. An ideal piece to bring a touch of history and culture into any space.

Rhythm

The thirties were a time of innovation, a time to be bold and bright, two words that perfectly describe our Rhythm rug and the work of Allan Walton Textiles. Based on a piece of furnishing fabric, this design uses bold accents of colour in a soft woollen pile to draw attention to the unique pattern. To give a contemporary update our designers have chosen to use a monochromatic grey and white base with hand-crafted cut and loop techniques to draw attention to the on-trend ochre shade.

Omega

Balancing modern manufacturing techniques with historic design can be a tricky task but as our Omega rug proves; it is more than worth it. Using the latest techniques the Omega is produced using recycled PET Yarn created from used plastic bottles. The design is an example of the work created within the pioneering graphics studio of the same name. Combining design and manufacture is what makes the Omega rug stand out as an innovating rug that serves the past as well as the future in perfect harmony.

Honeysuckle

Within the British Arts and Crafts movement, William Morris was a seminal figure, his work drawing our attention back to the natural elements that surround us. An almost tessellating textile of poppies, tulips and honeysuckle from 1876 is the inspiration behind our Honeysuckle V&A design. The expert craftsmen behind Honeysuckle have used hand-tufted techniques to define the vining nature of the design that makes it very clearly a William Morris design. Perfect for bringing the beauty of nature and history into your home.

These pieces are just a few from our 12-strong V&A Inspired collection, you can also take look at Rhapsody, Fanfare, Morderne, Rosa, Salon and Jazz for more stunning examples of what happens when modern interiors meet historic design.

Our collaboration with V&A allows us to keep the past alive, and enjoy the stories that these historic designs tell, perfect for art-connoisseurs and interior-lovers alike. The archives span thousands of years of creativity that are kept alive by our appreciation and passion to keep creating.
