Zelda: A V&A Inspired Rug
Influenced by the 20th century Parisian pochoir printing process, our latest launch for Inspired by V&A is one that alludes to the boldly understated glamour of the Art Deco movement, with craftmanship, and design at its heart.
As part of the Luxmi Collection, Zelda references a piece of work from the V&A museum, an archive that spans over 5000 years of human design.. Symbolising the amalgamation of modernity and fashion, Zelda is inspired by the luxurious decorative style within the Art Deco movement of the 20th Century.
The geometric, streamlined form of Zelda, is a homage to the work of early 20th century chemist and artist Edouard Bénédictus, in particular a book plate from his work Relais (1930), which uses the colour replication technique: pochoir, typically characterized by strong lines, bold colours and a stencil-like effect.
Handwoven by skilled craftsmen in India and crafted in a wool-rich/viscose blend, the texture of the rug is perfectly reminiscent of the luxurious feel of the thirties. The hand-carved detail within the design, reimagines the bold glamour of the era, while the understated pastel palette, balances rich hues with understated neutrals to give a contemporary colourway to a classic composition. Zelda is available in three standard sizes of 120 x 170cm, 160 x 230cm and 200 x 290cm.
This introduction sees Zelda join the ranks of existing designs for Inspired by V&A – Rosa, Rhythm, Phoenix and Moderne – in the Luxmi collection, establishing a series of hand-crafted rugs led by quality and design inspired by the world’s leading museum of art, design and performance.
