How it’s made: Drew Braid Jute rugs
Our latest Jute Braid Rugs have been expertly handcrafted in India using a traditional weaving technique called Soumak braiding. But what is Soumak braiding? Read more to find out…

Like Kilim style rugs, Soumak is a rug making technique dating back to weaving cultures in the Caucasus, from the Eastern Mediterranean. Along with adjacent areas of Southwestern Turkmenistan.

The definition of Soumak is a weaving technique that allows the maker to work on vertical, horizontal, or diagonal sections at any one time. It differs from Kilim, as a Kilim weave remains smooth on both sides, whereas Soumak has a rugged back until it is woven into the fabric during the making process. Soumak adds strength to the weave, as well as a versatile, embroidery like pattern.

Here at Flair, we pride ourselves on our innovative approach to design, by utilising the skills and techniques of our global partners. To find out more about our new to market jute rugs, explore our full Jute Range here.
